Simon Naylor was the lucky man to head into new territory. His recent trip to Bhutan focused on exploring the potential for a conservancy model at Phibsoo Wildlife Sanctuary. He engaged with the Director of Forest and Park Services to discuss infrastructure needs for both conservation and tourism, including roads, waterholes, salt licks, and fire breaks. The sanctuary is currently passively managed, and we introduced the concept of active conservation—such as research initiatives and potential rhino reintroduction. We also supported plans for wildlife rescue and rehabilitation centres, including vet training. Discussions included strategies for managing human-wildlife conflict and the relocation of species like gaur and takin. We assessed the feasibility of a Red Panda community tourism initiative and offered guidance on tourism planning. A meeting with a senior representative from His Majesty The King’s office may open doors for broader collaboration with the Bhutanese government on national conservation policy and conservancy frameworks. A promising and productive visit.
